New York State Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship

Tuition for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study, up to SUNY tuition rates

This scholarship covers tuition for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study, up to State University of New York rates, with an exception for approved five-year programmes. It is for the children, spouse and financial dependents of a service member who died, became severely and permanently disabled in the line of duty, or was declared missing in action, and for New York veterans who themselves became severely and permanently disabled from an injury or illness that occurred in the line of duty. Severely disabled means permanently disabled and unable to work, as determined by a doctor.

How to apply

Complete the New York State MERIT Scholarship online application with your supporting documents, plus the New York State Tuition Assistance Program application and the FAFSA. If you are applying on the basis of a disability, also submit the New York State Total and Permanent Disability Verification Form. What you'll need

Documentation of the service member’s death, severe and permanent disability or missing in action status, proof of your relationship to them, your high school diploma, equivalency diploma or Ability to Benefit test result, and a completed TAP application and FAFSA.

Eligibility

  • You are the child, spouse or financial dependent of a qualifying service member, or you are the disabled veteran yourself
  • The service member was a New York resident while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or the New York National Guard
  • The service member died in the line of duty, became severely and permanently disabled in the line of duty, or was declared missing in action
  • You are enrolled full time, taking 12 or more credits per semester, at an approved postsecondary institution in New York
  • You graduated high school in the U.S., earned a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally approved Ability to Benefit test
  • You are in good academic standing and not in default on any state or federal student loan or repayment of state awards
