New York public employees serving in a reserve component get 22 workdays, which is 30 calendar days, of military leave at full pay each calendar year when ordered to state or federal active duty, including attendance at a service school or advanced training. Once your full-pay leave is used, the state pays the difference between your regular state salary and your regular military pay while you are on active duty. The state also keeps your family covered under the state health insurance plan free of charge for the period of federally ordered military duty, for up to 12 months minus any time you are in full pay status.
Give your agency’s human resources office a copy of your orders and request military leave before you go.
