New York State Recruitment Incentive and Retention Program (RIRP)

New York National Guard Education Services Office, New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs
Up to $1,700 per semester and $3,400 per calendar year, up to SUNY tuition rates

If you serve in the New York National Guard, this program pays your tuition up to State University of New York rates while you study for an undergraduate degree. The maximum award is $1,700 per semester and $3,400 per calendar year, for no more than eight semesters of full-time study or 16 semesters of part-time study. Five-year programs can get an exception to the semester limit.

How to apply

Send your completed application and the documents listed on it to ng.ny.nyarng.mbx.rirpny@army.mil. Apply by 15 August for the fall semester and 15 December for the spring semester. For help, call the New York National Guard Education Services Office at 518-786-0466.

What you'll need

Your completed RIRP application with the documentation listed on it, proof that you are an active New York National Guard member in good standing, your school enrollment information, and evidence that you applied for all non-debt producing tuition financial aid for the semester.

Eligibility

  • You are an active member of the New York National Guard in good standing
  • You attended all scheduled drills and training, or completed authorized make-up training
  • Your expiration term of service is after the last semester you use RIRP funds
  • You have been a New York resident for at least 186 days before applying, not counting periods of active duty service
  • You are not flagged for adverse action
  • You are enrolled full time or part time in an undergraduate degree producing program
