New York State Supplemental Burial Allowance

New York State Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS)
Up to $6,000 toward funeral and burial costs

Surviving family members of a service member who died as a result of service in a combat zone can receive up to $6,000 toward funeral and burial costs that the federal government does not cover.

How to apply

Complete the Application for Supplemental Burial Allowance and email it with the required documents to DVASupplementalBurialAllowance@veterans.ny.gov, or mail it to New York State Department of Veterans’ Services, Attn: Supplemental Burial Allowance, 2 Empire State Plaza, 17th Floor, Albany, NY 12223. For help, call the DVS Help Line at 888-838-7697.

What you'll need

The completed application plus the documents listed on it, including the death certificate or report of casualty, documentation of the circumstances of death, and proof of the service member’s New York residency or New York National Guard service.

Eligibility

  • You are a surviving family member of the service member
  • The service member was a New York State resident at the time of death, or was a New York National Guard member who died after being called to active service
  • The service member died in a combat zone, died while receiving hazardous duty pay, or died from wounds sustained in a combat zone or while receiving hazardous duty pay
