New York State Veterans’ Nursing Homes

New York State Veterans’ Homes
Skilled nursing care and rehabilitation at five state veterans’ homes

New York runs five veterans’ nursing homes providing skilled nursing care and rehabilitation to eligible veterans and their dependents: St. Albans in Jamaica, Batavia, Oxford, the Long Island State Veterans’ Home in Stony Brook, and Montrose. Admission priority goes first to a veteran accompanied by their spouse, then wartime veterans, non-wartime veterans, spouses and unremarried surviving spouses, and Gold Star mothers and fathers.

How to apply

Contact the veterans’ nursing home you want directly. Use the general admission application for the Oxford, St. Albans, Batavia and Montrose homes, and the separate Long Island State Veterans’ Home application for that home.

What you'll need

The veteran’s discharge paperwork showing at least 30 days of active duty and an honorable discharge, proof that they entered service from New York or were a New York resident for the year before applying, a marriage certificate for a spouse or surviving spouse, and medical documentation showing the need for skilled nursing care.

Eligibility

  • You require skilled nursing care
  • The veteran entered active duty service from New York, or was a New York resident for one year before applying
  • The veteran served at least 30 days of active duty and received an honorable discharge
  • If you are applying as a spouse you were married to the veteran for the year before applying, as an unremarried surviving spouse you were married for the year before the veteran’s death, and as an unremarried surviving spouse of a service member who died on active duty or as a Gold Star parent the 30-day active duty requirement does not apply to you
