New York State Veterans with Disabilities Employment Program (55-c)

500 entry level state positions set aside, with the initial written examination waived

Section 55-c of the Civil Service Law sets aside 500 entry level state positions for qualified wartime veterans with disabilities. If you meet the minimum qualifications for a position, you do not have to sit an initial written examination. Once approved you also get access to the 55-b/c recruitment resources portal, where state agencies filling entry level positions can see your details.

How to apply

Submit the Application for the New York State Governor’s Program to Hire Persons with Disabilities Under Sections 55-b and 55-c, following the submission instructions on the form, together with your DD214 and VA Benefit Summary Letter. The Department of Civil Service then sends you an eligibility letter to submit with your resume when you apply for entry level positions.

What you'll need

The completed 55-b/55-c application, your DD214, and your VA Benefit Summary Letter showing a 10 percent or greater disability rating, or documentation of your Purple Heart.

Eligibility

  • You served on full-time active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, other than for training
  • You received a Purple Heart, or you have a disability rating of 10 percent or greater from the VA
  • You served during the Vietnam War between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975, in Lebanon between June 1, 1983 and December 1, 1987, in Grenada between October 23, 1983 and November 21, 1983, in Panama between December 20, 1989 and January 31, 1990, in the Persian Gulf from August 2, 1990 until hostilities end, or you received an Expeditionary Medal
  • You meet the minimum qualifications for the position
