New York Vehicle Registration and Plate Fee Exemption for Eligible Veterans

Vehicle registration fee and plate fee waived

Eligible veterans pay no vehicle registration fee and no vehicle plate fee. You qualify if you receive federal funds to buy or modify a specially adapted vehicle for a service-connected injury or disability, or if you are eligible for and apply for New York Medal of Honor or Prisoner of War custom plates.

How to apply

Apply through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles with the matching statement form: the Statement to Register a Vehicle Under Title 38 if you received federal funds for an adapted vehicle, or the Statement to Register a Vehicle with Former POW or Congressional Medal of Honor Plates for those plates.

What you'll need

Your VA documentation showing federal funds for the purchase or modification of a specially adapted vehicle, or your documentation of the Medal of Honor or of prisoner of war status, plus the matching DMV statement form.

Eligibility

  • You receive federal funds for the purchase or modification of a specially adapted vehicle for a service-connected injury or disability, you are eligible for and applying for New York Medal of Honor custom plates, or you are eligible for and applying for New York Prisoner of War custom plates
