Retirement Credit for Military Service in the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System (LGERS)

North Carolina Department of State Treasurer, Retirement Systems Division
Creditable service for qualifying active duty, free or purchasable

Members of the Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System can add creditable service for qualifying military duty. If you left covered employment for active duty, received a discharge other than dishonorable and returned, your first period of active duty can be credited at no cost. If you do not qualify for the free credit you can buy credit with a lump sum once you have five years of LGERS contributions, at a price equal to the full actuarial cost of the extra credit.
