North Carolina Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans

Eight academic semesters of scholarship, to be used within eight years

If you are the child of a wartime veteran who died, was disabled, was held as a prisoner of war or was awarded the Purple Heart, you can get a scholarship at a participating North Carolina school. It covers eight academic semesters and has to be used within eight years.

How to apply

Apply online through the state scholarship portal at scholarships.milvets.nc.gov. Funding is limited, so check the portal for the current application status before you start.

What you'll need

Your veteran parent’s discharge paperwork and VA rating or casualty documentation, proof of your relationship to them, and proof that you or they meet the residency requirement.

Eligibility

  • You are under age 25 at the time you apply
  • You are the child of a veteran who served during a wartime period
  • Your veteran parent was killed in action or died of wounds, died from service-connected injuries, wounds, illness or other causes incurred or aggravated during wartime service, had a VA disability rating of 20 percent or more incurred during wartime service at the time of death, was receiving a VA pension for a non service-connected total and permanent disability at the time of death, was awarded the Purple Heart, or was listed as missing in action, captured in the line of duty by a hostile force, or forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power
  • Your veteran parent was a legal resident of North Carolina when they entered the U.S. Armed Forces, or you were born in North Carolina and have lived there continuously since birth
