North Carolina Special Military and Veterans License Plates

31 plate designs, several of them issued free of the usual plate fee

North Carolina offers 31 distinctive license plates for service members, veterans, retired service members and certain family members. Each plate has its own eligibility and documentation rules, and any of them can be personalized for $30. Every military and veteran plate request has to be certified by the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs before you apply.

How to apply

Get your eligibility certified by the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, then order through the myNCDMV online service, mail Form MVR-33A to the address on the form, or visit any DMV plate and vehicle office.

What you'll need

Your DMVA certification, plus the proof of eligibility for the plate you want, which is usually your DD214, VA rating documentation or casualty paperwork.

Eligibility

  • You are registering a vehicle in North Carolina
  • You qualify for one of the military or veteran license plates
  • You have your eligibility certified by the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs
