10 points on scored selections, or year-for-year credit for military training and experience

You get preference for North Carolina state jobs, and for promotions, reassignments, horizontal transfers and reduction-in-force decisions. Where a numerical score is used you get 10 points added. Where there is no scoring, you get year-for-year and month-for-month credit for military training and experience that matches the knowledge, skills and abilities the job needs.

Claim veterans or National Guard preference on your application when you apply for a North Carolina state job, and attach your supporting documents.

What you'll need

Your DD214, plus your VA rating letter, marriage certificate or casualty documentation depending on which preference you are claiming.

Eligibility

  • You meet the minimum training and experience requirements for the position and can perform its duties
  • You are a veteran who served on active duty other than for training during a period of war and received an other than dishonorable discharge, a veteran with a peacetime service-connected disability, the spouse of a disabled veteran, the surviving spouse or dependent of a veteran who died on active duty during a period of war or in the line of duty during peacetime, a North Carolina resident in good standing in the North Carolina National Guard, a North Carolina resident formerly in the North Carolina National Guard discharged under honorable conditions after at least six years of creditable service, or the surviving spouse or dependent of a North Carolina National Guard member who died on state active duty or in the line of duty during peacetime
