North Dakota Commercial Driver's License Military Test Waivers

CDL skills test waived, and the knowledge test too for qualifying military occupational specialties

If you drive commercial motor vehicles for the U.S. Armed Forces, North Dakota can waive the skills portion of the commercial driver license test, and the knowledge portion too if you have held one of the qualifying military occupational specialties in the last year.

How to apply

Complete the Application for Military CDL Knowledge Test or Knowledge and Skills Test Waiver, SFN 60071, and mail or email it to the NDDOT Driver’s License Division at the address on the form. They will write to tell you whether you meet the requirements. For questions call 701-328-2500.

What you'll need

Documentation of your military driving position, your driving record, and your military occupational specialty if you are also asking for the knowledge test waiver.

Eligibility

  • You have a North Dakota driver's license
  • You have had a clean driving record for the past two years
  • You are currently employed, or were employed within the last 12 months, in a military duty position that required you to operate a commercial vehicle
  • If you want the knowledge test waived as well, you held one of these military occupational specialties in the last year: Army 88M, 14T or 92F, Air Force 2T1, 2F0 or 3E2, Marine Corps 3531, or Navy EO
