Two sets of plates exempt from sales tax and registration fees

With a 100 percent service-connected disability you can get two sets of North Dakota Disabled American Veteran license plates, and they are exempt from sales taxes and registration fees. An unremarried surviving spouse can keep one plate for their own use. If you meet North Dakota’s mobility impairment criteria you can also ask for a handicapped symbol on the plate.

How to apply

Send a completed Application for Certificate of Title and Registration of a Vehicle, SFN 2872, with your VA letter to the Motor Vehicle Division, North Dakota Department of Transportation, 608 E Boulevard Avenue, Bismarck ND 58505-0780. To add the handicapped symbol, also submit an Application for Mobility Impaired Parking Permit, SFN 2886.

What you'll need

A letter from the VA stating that you have a 100 percent service-connected disability, plus your vehicle title and registration details.

Eligibility

  • You have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who did
  • You provide a letter from the VA stating the 100 percent service-connected disability
