North Dakota Hardship Assistance Grant

North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (NDDVA), through county veterans service officers
Financial assistance up to a total of $5,000

You can get state financial help with unmet expenses: dental or denture work other than routine and maintenance procedures, optical expenses, hearing expenses, transportation for medical treatment, special needs for medical reasons, a housing deposit, and other emergency needs the Commissioner of Veterans Affairs approves.

How to apply

Contact your local North Dakota veterans service officer to apply. Your medical bills showing the work completed and all payments and credits have to reach the department within 60 to 90 days of the date your grant is approved.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or VA rating documentation, proof that you have lived in North Dakota for the past year, your income and asset information, and the bills or estimates for the expense you need help with.

Eligibility

  • You have been a North Dakota resident for one year before the date you apply
  • You are a veteran who served on federal active duty other than for training and was discharged under other than dishonorable conditions, a veteran who served on federal active duty and has a disability rating from the VA, or the spouse or surviving spouse of such a veteran
  • You meet the income and asset levels the North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs sets
  • You have an unmet expense the grant covers, such as dental, optical, hearing, medical transportation, a special medical need or a housing deposit
