Ohio War Orphan and Severely Disabled Veterans' Children Scholarship

General and instructional fees paid for up to five academic years, at an amount set annually

You can get tuition assistance toward an associate or bachelor’s degree if you are the child of a deceased or severely disabled Ohio veteran, or of a service member declared a prisoner of war or missing in action. The award pays general and instructional fees for up to five academic years, and the amount is set each year based on how many eligible students apply.

Apply online through the Ohio Department of Higher Education electronic application, or mail or fax a paper application to the War Orphans Program Manager, Ohio Department of Higher Education, Office of Financial Aid, 25 South Front Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215-3414, fax 614-466-5866. What you'll need

The veteran parent’s DD214 and VA rating or death documentation, proof of your Ohio residency, proof of your relationship to the veteran, and your school enrollment information.

Eligibility

  • You are an Ohio resident aged 16 to 24
  • You are enrolled full time in an undergraduate program leading to an associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligible Ohio college or university
  • Your veteran parent is deceased, is a prisoner of war or missing in action, has a service-connected disability rating of 60 percent or more, receives VA benefits for a total and permanent non-service-connected disability, or, if they served only in the Ohio National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves, was killed or permanently and totally disabled at a scheduled training assembly, field training or active duty for training
  • Your veteran parent entered the U.S. Armed Forces as a resident of Ohio, or, if their DD214 shows a place of entry or home of record outside Ohio, you have five cumulative years of Ohio residency including the year before you apply and four of any of the previous 10 years
  • Your veteran parent’s disability or death occurred during a qualifying period of conflict
