Oregon public employers must give you hiring preference. Veterans get five percentage points added to their score and disabled veterans get 10. Where a job has no numerical scoring, eligible veterans must be given special consideration in the hiring decision. Public employers must interview every veteran whose application meets the minimum qualifications, and if you are not hired you can ask in writing why. Preference also applies to state employees seeking promotion to a civil service position with a higher maximum salary. From 1 January 2026 current and former Oregon National Guard members are covered as well.
Claim the preference on your application for the public employer position and attach your proof of service and, if you are claiming as a disabled veteran, your disability documentation.
Your DD214, and for disabled veteran preference your VA disability rating letter, your discharge paperwork showing release for a service-connected injury or illness, or your Purple Heart citation.
