Pennsylvania Driver’s License Benefits for Service Members and their Dependents

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Bureau of Driver Licensing
Licence stays valid until 45 days after you return or are discharged; no-photo renewal available

Your Pennsylvania driver’s license stays valid while you are stationed outside Pennsylvania on active duty, and remains valid until 45 days after you return to Pennsylvania or after your discharge. The same applies to your spouse and dependent children who live in your household. If you are outside Pennsylvania for 60 days because of active duty when your licence is due for renewal, Pennsylvania will issue a valid licence without a photo.

How to apply

There is nothing to apply for to keep your licence valid. To renew without a photo while you are away, contact PennDOT and explain that active duty requirements keep you outside Pennsylvania.

What you'll need

Your expired Pennsylvania driver’s licence and official documents showing you are assigned outside Pennsylvania, which you must carry whenever you drive.

Eligibility

  • You hold a Pennsylvania driver’s licence
  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and stationed outside Pennsylvania, or you are the spouse or dependent child living in that service member’s household
