Pennsylvania Veterans' Preference when Hiring for State Employment

Pennsylvania Office of Administration, and Pennsylvania municipal employers
10 points added to a passing examination score, plus appointment, promotion and retention preference

Ten points are added to your passing state and municipal employment examination score, and you get preference for all appointments and promotions and during a reduction in force.

How to apply

Claim the preference when you apply for Pennsylvania state or municipal employment and submit your supporting documents. For questions call the Pennsylvania Office of Administration at 717-783-6655 or email ra-cs-vetpreference@pa.gov.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or current service documentation, plus your VA rating letter, marriage certificate or death documentation if you are claiming as a spouse or surviving spouse.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for Pennsylvania state or municipal employment
  • You achieve a passing examination score
  • You served in an active or reserve component and completed your initial service obligation with a discharge other than dishonorable, you served on active duty other than for training during any war or armed conflict with a discharge other than dishonorable, you are still serving in a reserve component, you served at least three years on active duty and are within 90 days of a projected discharge other than dishonorable, you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran who was eligible for preference, or you are the spouse of a veteran with a total and permanent disability rating
