You can buy pension credit for up to 10 years of active military service performed before you enrolled in a New Jersey retirement system. Wartime veterans can buy an additional five years. This applies to the Public Employees’ Retirement System, the Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund, the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System and the State Police Retirement System. Only full-time active duty counts, periods shorter than 30 days do not count, and basic training, weekend drills and annual summer training as a reserve component member do not count.
Contact the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits to request a purchase of military service credit, and submit your DD214.
