Washington county auditors record your official discharge documents free of charge. Documents filed after June 30, 2002 are not public record. Documents filed before that date are public record unless you file a Request for Exemption from Public Disclosure of Discharge Papers with your county auditor, which can cost no more than $7 to record. Once exempt, your discharge papers can only be released to you, your next of kin, the appointed personal representative or executor for a deceased veteran, someone holding your general power of attorney, or someone you designate in writing.
Take your discharge paperwork to your county auditor and ask to have it recorded. If it was filed before June 30, 2002, also file a Request for Exemption from Public Disclosure of Discharge Papers.
Your DD214 or other official discharge document, and the exemption request form if you are asking for one.
