You get first preference for placement when space is available in public housing for the elderly if you are a wartime disabled veteran. Some local housing authorities go further: Cranston, East Greenwich, East Providence, Woonsocket and Johnston give a veterans preference in local housing developments; Burrillville (at 100 percent disability), Bristol (in elderly housing), East Greenwich, Lincoln, Warren and Woonsocket give a preference to service-connected disabled veterans; East Greenwich gives a preference to families of deceased veterans; and the Housing Authority of the City of Pawtucket keeps 10 units for chronically homeless applicants, preferring disabled veterans and veterans who served in World War II or earlier.
Contact the housing authority in your city or town, not the state. The Rhode Island Housing Authority Office Directory lists them.
Your DD214 showing a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, documentation of the disability you incurred during war or conflict, and whatever the housing project requires of every applicant.
