Rhode Island Civil Service Veterans Hiring Preference

5 points added to a passing exam score, or 10 points for disabled wartime veterans

Rhode Island adds points to your passing civil service entrance exam score when you apply for competitive state employment. Veterans get a 5-point credit, and disabled wartime veterans get a 10-point credit.

Claim the preference when you apply for competitive state employment and submit your supporting documents with the application.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or retirement paperwork showing your qualifying service, and your VA disability rating documentation and campaign or expeditionary medal citation if you are claiming the disabled wartime veteran credit.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for competitive Rhode Island state employment
  • You served 30 or more days on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and received a discharge other than dishonorable, or you served less than 30 days and were discharged because of a service-connected disability, or you retired from the National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves after 20 or more years of service
  • You achieved a passing score on the civil service entrance exam
  • If you are claiming the 10-point disabled wartime veteran credit, you were awarded a campaign ribbon or expeditionary medal earned in a conflict, war, undeclared war or contingency operation, you received an honorable or general discharge, and you have a service-connected disability rating from the VA
