Rhode Island Commercial Driver License (CDL) Military Skills Test Waiver

Rhode Island waives the skills test portion of the commercial driver license exam based on your military driving experience. You still have to take the CDL knowledge tests, and school bus and passenger endorsements cannot be transferred.

Submit the DMV Application for Military Skills Test Waiver, including certification by your commanding officer, at any Rhode Island DMV location.

What you'll need

The completed waiver application with your commanding officer’s certification, and documentation of the military position that required you to operate a vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for a Rhode Island commercial driver license
  • You are currently licensed and served within the past year in a U.S. Armed Forces position that required you to operate a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle
  • You have not held more than one license, other than a military license, in the past two years
  • You have not had any license suspended, revoked or cancelled in the past two years
  • You have no convictions for the disqualifying offenses listed on the application, no more than one conviction for a serious traffic violation, and no record of an at-fault accident or a traffic control violation resulting from an accident
