Rhode Island Residency for Tuition Purposes for Service Members, Veterans and Eligible Dependents

In-state tuition rates regardless of your state of residence

You can pay in-state tuition rates at the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College or the University of Rhode Island no matter which state you live in, if you are a service member, veteran or eligible family member.

How to apply

Tell the admissions or financial aid office at the school you are applying to that you are claiming in-state rates for military service, and give them your documentation. For questions call 401-736-1164.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or orders showing your active duty service, proof of your relationship to the service member if you are a spouse or dependent, and your VA education benefit paperwork if you are using transferred benefits or a Fry Scholarship.

Eligibility

  • You are enrolling at the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College or the University of Rhode Island
  • You served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for 30 or more days, or you are the spouse or dependent of someone who did, or you were discharged after less than 30 days of active duty because of a service-connected injury, or you live in Rhode Island and are using transferred VA education benefits or a Fry Scholarship
