No cost burial for veterans; family members pay for the grave liner

The state veterans cemetery in Exeter provides burial for service members, veterans and their eligible family members, with in-ground casket burial, in-ground cremation burial, above-ground columbarium cremation sites and committal services. Burial is free for veterans; eligible family members are charged for the grave liner. Everyone eligible for burial there is also entitled to military funeral honors.

How to apply

Submit the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery interment application, on paper or online. The cemetery is at 301 South County Trail, Exeter RI 02822-9712, phone 401-268-3088.

What you'll need

The veteran’s DD214 or other discharge paperwork, proof of Rhode Island residency or of entering the service from Rhode Island, and a marriage certificate or dependent documentation for family members.

Eligibility

  • You were a Rhode Island resident for the two consecutive years before death, or you entered the U.S. Armed Forces from Rhode Island
  • You were discharged from active duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces under conditions other than dishonorable, or died while serving on active duty, or served at least 20 years in the National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves and qualified for military retired pay (or would have qualified except that death occurred before age 60), or were a reserve component member activated for federal service other than active duty for training
  • Your spouse and dependents qualify through you, with dependent children limited to unmarried children under 21, under 23 if a full-time student at an approved school, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21
