Safekeeping of Abandoned Tennessee Veterans Medals

Abandoned medals held and returned at no cost

Military medals that end up abandoned are held by the Tennessee State Treasurer until the owner, the owner’s heirs or beneficiaries can be identified and the medal returned. The Treasurer can appoint a custodian, such as a veterans organization, to hold the medals.

Search for the medal on the Tennessee Department of Treasury Unclaimed Property Division site and file a claim for it.

What you'll need

Proof of your identity and, if you are claiming as an heir or beneficiary, documentation of your relationship to the owner.

Eligibility

  • You are the owner of a military medal held as unclaimed property, or the owner’s heir or beneficiary
  • You can prove your identity or your relationship to the owner
