South Carolina Property Tax Exemption for Former Prisoners of War and Medal of Honor Recipients

Complete property tax exemption on your home and up to one acre

If you were a prisoner of war or you received the Medal of Honor, your home and up to one acre of the land it sits on are completely exempt from South Carolina property tax. An unremarried surviving spouse keeps the exemption while they hold sole ownership of the home.

How to apply

Apply through the South Carolina Department of Revenue, not your county. Apply online at MyDORWAY using the Exempt Property Application link, or mail Form PT-401I with the required documents to SCDOR, Government Services Division, PO Box 125, Columbia SC 29214-0720. What you'll need

Documentation of your prisoner of war status or your Medal of Honor award, proof that you own the home and live in it, and the deed showing the home is in your name alone or jointly with your spouse. A surviving spouse also needs the veteran’s death certificate and proof of sole ownership.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Carolina resident
  • You were a prisoner of war, or you received the Medal of Honor, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who was
  • You occupy the home as its owner
  • The home is titled solely in your name or jointly with your spouse
  • If you are the unremarried surviving spouse, you have maintained sole ownership of the home
