As an active member of the South Carolina Retirement System you can buy up to six years of service credit for time you served in the U.S. Armed Forces, which can raise your state retirement benefit or let you draw it sooner. The cost is set by the retirement system’s independent actuary based on your age, your existing service credit and your career highest annual pay, and it will not be less than 16 percent of your career highest annual pay for each year you buy.
Contact the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority to request a service purchase cost quote and submit your discharge paperwork. You can also decide in advance to keep contributing to your retirement account while you are on military leave, or make those contributions after you get back.
