If you are a South Carolina National Guard member ordered to state active duty, state law extends federal reemployment protections to you and adds protections covering rent, mortgages, liens, leases, pensions and health insurance. It also lets you cancel telecommunication, internet, television, satellite radio and athletic club or gym contracts if your orders require you to relocate for 90 days or more. If the law is violated, you, your dependent or the South Carolina Attorney General can sue for an injunction, restitution and a civil penalty of up to $5,000 per violation.
Contact the South Carolina National Guard Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at 803-299-4319. To cancel a covered contract, give the provider a copy of your relocation orders and cite the state Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
