South Carolina waives tuition at its state supported colleges, universities and post high school technical education institutions for the children of certain war veterans. You have to be 26 or younger to qualify.

Apply through the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs online application for tuition assistance for certain war veterans’ children. For questions call 803-647-2434.

What you'll need

Your veteran parent’s DD214 showing wartime service and an other than dishonorable discharge, their VA rating letter or award documentation, proof of their South Carolina residency, proof of your relationship to them, and a death certificate if the veteran has died.

Eligibility

  • You are the child of a veteran and you are 26 years old or younger
  • You are enrolled at a South Carolina state supported college or university, or a post high school technical education institution
  • Your veteran parent served during a wartime period and received an other than dishonorable discharge from active duty
  • Your veteran parent was a South Carolina resident when they entered service, during service and is a resident now, or was a resident for at least one year before you applied and is a resident now, or if they have died was a resident for the year before their death
  • Your veteran parent was killed in action, died while serving, died of a service-connected disease or disability, was a prisoner of war or declared missing in action, has a total and permanent VA disability rating from any cause, received the Medal of Honor, or received the Purple Heart
