South Carolina Vehicle Property Tax Exemption for Former Prisoners of War and Medal of Honor Recipients

South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR)
Complete property tax exemption on up to two private passenger vehicles

If you were a prisoner of war or you received the Medal of Honor, two private passenger vehicles you own or lease, alone or jointly with your spouse, are completely exempt from South Carolina property tax. Unlike the home exemption, this vehicle exemption does not pass to a surviving spouse.

How to apply

Apply through the South Carolina Department of Revenue, not your county auditor. Apply online at MyDORWAY using the Exempt Property Application link, or mail Form PT-401I with the required documents to SCDOR, Government Services Division, PO Box 125, Columbia SC 29214-0720. What you'll need

Documentation of your prisoner of war status or Medal of Honor award, and the registration and title or lease for each vehicle you are claiming.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Carolina resident
  • You were a prisoner of war, or you received the Medal of Honor
  • You own or lease the vehicle alone or jointly with your spouse
  • You are claiming no more than two private passenger vehicles in total
