If you are the surviving spouse of a veteran who had a 100 percent, total and permanent, service-connected disability rating from the VA, and you moved to South Carolina after the veteran died, you can claim a complete property tax exemption on one private passenger vehicle.

How to apply

Apply through the South Carolina Department of Revenue. Apply online at MyDORWAY using the Exempt Property Application link, or mail Form PT-401I with the required documents to SCDOR, Government Services Division, PO Box 125, Columbia SC 29214-0720. What you'll need

The veteran’s VA letter showing a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected rating, the veteran’s death certificate, your marriage certificate, and the registration and title for the vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are the surviving spouse of a veteran who had a 100 percent, total and permanent, service-connected disability rating from the VA
  • You moved to South Carolina after the veteran died
  • You are claiming the exemption on one private passenger vehicle
