$100 burial allowance

South Dakota pays $100 toward burial costs for an honorably discharged resident veteran, their spouse or their surviving spouse when the estate did not leave enough money to pay for the burial.

How to apply

Give your county or tribal veterans service officer an affidavit stating that there are not enough funds for the funeral, together with a copy of the funeral bill, within one year of the burial.

What you'll need

An affidavit stating that sufficient funds are not available for funeral expenses, a copy of the funeral bill, the veteran’s discharge paperwork, and proof of the veteran’s South Dakota residency.

Eligibility

  • You are a beneficiary of a deceased South Dakota veteran, their spouse or their surviving spouse
  • The veteran received an honorable discharge
  • The veteran was a South Dakota resident for one year before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, or for one year before their death
  • The estate did not leave enough money to cover the funeral expenses
