South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License Military Skills Test Waiver

CDL skills test waived

You can skip the skills test part of the South Dakota commercial driver’s license exam if you have recent experience driving military vehicles like the commercial vehicle you plan to drive. You still have to pass the written tests. The waiver does not cover hazardous materials or school bus endorsements.

How to apply

Send your completed application and documents, with your phone number and email address, to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Driver Licensing Program, 118 W. Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501.

What you'll need

The completed South Dakota CDL Military Waivers checklist and application, proof of current or previous military service such as a DD214, NGB22, discharge papers or a current military ID card, and your two most recent years of military W-2 forms.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Dakota resident and hold a South Dakota driver’s license
  • You have been licensed on and have operated the same type of commercial vehicle you expect to drive as a civilian, for at least two years as an active duty service member or four years as a National Guard or U.S. Armed Forces Reserve service member
  • You pass the South Dakota CDL written tests
  • If you have left the service, you are within one year of your separation from the U.S. Armed Forces
