Retirement service credit continues during federal active duty

You keep earning South Dakota Retirement System credited service while you are called to federal active duty, so a deployment does not cost you retirement credit.

How to apply

Take an authorized leave of absence through your employer before you go, and contact the South Dakota Retirement System when you return to confirm your credited service.

What you'll need

Your activation orders, your DD214 or discharge paperwork, and confirmation from your employer of your authorized leave of absence.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Dakota Retirement System member
  • You are a National Guard or U.S. Armed Forces Reserve service member called to federal active duty
  • You were employed before going on military leave
  • You return to public service within one year of discharge
  • You remain employed for at least one year after you return
