Free Tuition at South Dakota State Supported Schools for Veterans

South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs
One month of free undergraduate tuition per month served, from one to four academic years

You can study tuition free at a South Dakota state supported university or technical college if you served on active duty during a qualifying wartime period. You earn one month of free undergraduate tuition for each month you served, with a minimum of one academic year and a maximum of four academic years.

How to apply

Mail your completed application, a copy of your DD214 and, if you are qualifying on a disability rating, your VA Benefit Summary Letter to the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, 425 E. Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501.

The completed free tuition application, a copy of your DD214, and your VA Benefit Summary Letter if you are qualifying through a service-connected disability rating.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Dakota resident who qualifies for in-state tuition
  • You received an honorable discharge
  • You served on active duty on or after August 2, 1990
  • You received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or another campaign, expeditionary or service medal for taking part in combat operations outside the United States, or you have a service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more from the VA
  • You have used all of your VA education benefits
