South Dakota Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans

You can have up to $200,000 of your home’s value exempted from South Dakota property tax if you have a service-connected total and permanent disability rating from the VA. The exemption covers the house, the garage and up to one acre, and an unremarried surviving spouse keeps it.

How to apply

Apply through your local county director of equalization, not the state. Applications open each January and must be submitted on or before November 1 every year.

What you'll need

The completed South Dakota Application for Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemptions, your VA letter showing a service-connected total and permanent disability rating, and proof that you own and occupy the home.

Eligibility

  • You own the home and occupy it
  • You have a service-connected total and permanent disability rating from the VA, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who had one
