Long term nursing care at a 100-bed state facility

The Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs is a 100-bed long term care facility for resident veterans and their spouses. It has eight wings divided into neighborhoods, each with its own living room, dining room and kitchen. Services include complete medical care, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, 24-hour nursing, recreation programs, meals, social services, religious and spiritual services, transportation, and a veterans service officer on site.

Contact the Admissions Specialist at 605-745-5127, extension 1500118, or ask your county or tribal veterans service officer to help you through the application. The home is at 2500 Minnekahta Avenue, Hot Springs, SD 57747.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or discharge paperwork, proof of South Dakota residency, medical documentation of your care needs, confirmation that you qualify for the VA State Home Per Diem Program, and a marriage certificate if a spouse or surviving spouse is applying.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Dakota resident
  • You are a veteran who served your full service obligation in an active or reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces, or received an early discharge for a medical condition, hardship, reduction in force or at the convenience of the military, and received an honorable discharge, or you are the spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of such a veteran
  • If you are the veteran, you are eligible for the VA State Home Per Diem Program
  • If you are applying as a spouse, you have been married to and living with the veteran for at least one year before applying
  • If you are applying as an unremarried surviving spouse, you are at least 60 years old and were married to the veteran for at least one year before their death
