South Dakota Veteran and Military License Plates

Distinctive military and veteran plate designs, some issued free of charge

You can get one of South Dakota’s distinctive license plate designs honoring service members, veterans, Native American veterans, retired service members and eligible family members. The plates fall into two groups: specialty military plates, and military plates for veterans, tribal members and active duty.

How to apply

Submit your completed application, any fees and the required documentation to your local county treasurer’s office, not the state.

What you'll need

The application for the plate you want, your South Dakota driver’s license or ID card, and the proof of eligibility that plate requires, which is usually a DD214, medal certificate or VA documentation.

Eligibility

  • You are a South Dakota resident
  • You hold a South Dakota driver’s license or ID card
  • You qualify for one of the military or veteran plate designs
