South Dakota Veterans Headstone Fee Reimbursement

Local South Dakota county or tribal veterans service officer, with the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs
Up to $200 for setting a government headstone, plus $100 for etching a private headstone

South Dakota reimburses up to $200 of the cost of setting a government headstone or marker on a veteran’s grave. The state also pays $100 to have the veteran’s name, rank, branch of service and dates of birth and death professionally etched on the back of a privately purchased headstone.

Apply through your county or tribal veterans service officer.

What you'll need

The bill for setting the headstone or for the etching, the veteran’s discharge paperwork showing an honorable discharge, and proof of the veteran’s South Dakota residency.

Eligibility

  • You are the survivor or representative arranging the veteran’s headstone
  • The veteran received an honorable discharge
  • The veteran was a South Dakota resident for one year before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, or for one year before their death
