South Dakota Veterans Upward Bound Program, Rapid City
Free academic preparation, tutoring and career services

You can get free help getting ready for college, university or technical school: academic refresher classes, individual and group tutoring, study skills, GED preparation, entrance preparation and college curriculum information. The program also offers career interest inventories, job outlook information, help finding training, career exploration and planning, education funding information and financial aid application help. Supplies, instructional materials and all services are free. It runs at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the University Center in Rapid City, Black Hills State University, National American University and Western Dakota Technical Institute, and also serves veterans in online programs and elsewhere in the Black Hills region.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork showing your service and character of discharge, and income or first-generation information to establish eligibility.

Eligibility

  • You are a low income or first-generation college veteran
  • You served 181 days or more on active duty and received a discharge other than dishonorable, or you were discharged because of a service-connected disability, or you were a reserve component member called to active duty for more than 30 days, or you were a reserve component member who served on active duty in support of a contingency operation on or after September 11, 2001
