South Dakota Wartime Veteran and Active Duty Service Member Bonus

South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, through county and tribal veterans service officers
Up to $240 for non-hostile service, up to $500 for hostile service

South Dakota pays a cash bonus for active duty service during a qualifying wartime period. Service in a non-hostile area pays $100 for the first month and $20 for each month after, up to $240. Service in a hostile area pays $150 for the first month and $50 for each month after, up to $500. If you have a service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more you receive the maximum $500. If you qualified for a bonus for service before December 31, 1992 and again for service after January 1, 1993, you can receive two separate bonuses; everyone else gets one.

Apply through your local county or tribal veterans service officer, or mail your application to South Dakota Veterans Bonus, 425 E. Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501. Phone 605-773-7251.

What you'll need

The completed bonus application, your DD214 or current service documentation showing your active duty dates and any hostile-area service, proof that you were a South Dakota resident for six months before that service, and your VA rating letter if you have a service-connected disability.

Eligibility

  • You were a South Dakota resident for at least six months before your period of active duty service
  • You served on active duty other than active duty for training
  • You served between August 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991 with all active service counting, between March 4, 1991 and December 31, 1992 with only hostile-area service qualifying for the Southwest Asia Service Medal counting, between January 1, 1993 and September 10, 2001 with only hostile-area service qualifying for a campaign or service medal for combat operations counting, or from September 11, 2001 to a date still to be determined with all active service counting
  • If you have left the service, you received an honorable discharge
