State medal awarded to the immediate survivor

The state awards a medal to the immediate survivor of a Tennessee resident service member who was killed in action. The governor or the governor’s designee presents it, and the service member’s name is entered into the medal case.

What you'll need

The service member’s report of casualty or death certificate, documentation of the circumstances of death, proof of their Tennessee residency, and proof of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are the immediate survivor of a service member who was a Tennessee resident serving on active duty
  • The service member died while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States, while engaged in military support operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, while serving with friendly foreign forces in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force when the United States was not a belligerent party, or while serving in a combat zone designated by presidential order
