Tennessee Highways for Heroes Commercial Driver License Skills Test Waiver

You can skip the road skills test for a Tennessee commercial driver license and take only the written knowledge exam, based on your military commercial vehicle training and experience.

Ask your commanding officer to certify that you are eligible, then submit the Tennessee CDL skills test waiver application when you take your CDL knowledge exam.

What you'll need

Certification from your commanding officer that you are eligible, documentation of your military commercial vehicle training and experience, and your driving record.

Eligibility

  • You are a Tennessee resident and hold or are eligible for a Tennessee driver license
  • You are serving in an active or reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces, or you are a former service member who received a discharge other than dishonorable
  • You had military commercial vehicle driving training and experience and worked in a position in the last year that required operating a military commercial vehicle
  • You have been licensed for at least two years on a military vehicle similar to the commercial vehicle class you are applying for
  • You have not held more than one license other than a military license in the past two years, have not had a license suspended, revoked or cancelled in the past two years, have no convictions for a major offense in the past two years, and have no more than one conviction for a serious traffic violation in the past two years
