Tennessee Motor Vehicle Tax and Fee Exemption for Disabled Veterans with a VA Adapted Vehicle Grant

Tennessee Department of Revenue, through your local county clerk
Sales tax, registration fees and local motor vehicle privilege taxes exempt; sales tax exemption limited to the sales price above the grant amount

A new or used vehicle sold, given or donated to you is exempt from sales tax, registration fees and local motor vehicle privilege taxes if you have a service-connected disability and received a VA grant for a specially adapted vehicle. The sales and use tax exemption covers only the part of the sales price above the grant amount.

Claim the exemption at your local county clerk’s office when you title and register the vehicle, and bring your VA grant documentation.

What you'll need

Your VA documentation for the specially adapted vehicle grant, proof of your service-connected disability, and the bill of sale or transfer paperwork for the vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are a veteran or a service member on active duty
  • You have a service-connected disability
  • You received a VA grant for a specially adapted vehicle
  • The vehicle was sold, given or donated to you
