Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Exemption on Motor Vehicles Bought by Service Members

Full exemption from Tennessee sales and use tax on the vehicle

You pay no Tennessee sales or use tax on a motor vehicle you buy and register in Tennessee if you are stationed here on active duty, are in the Active Guard and Reserve program here, or have been called to active duty in a combat zone. If you qualify through a combat zone assignment, the exemption starts on the effective date of the orders sending you there and ends 90 days after you return.

How to apply

Give the seller a copy of your official orders when you buy the vehicle, then submit those orders to your county clerk to verify your Tennessee duty station, your combat zone assignment or your Active Guard and Reserve status.

What you'll need

A copy of your official military orders showing your Tennessee duty station, your combat zone assignment, or your Active Guard and Reserve status.

Eligibility

  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and stationed in Tennessee or at a military reservation located partly in Tennessee, or you are a Tennessee National Guard or U.S. Armed Forces Reserve member in the Active Guard and Reserve program stationed in Tennessee or at such a reservation, or you are a Tennessee National Guard or Reserve member called to active duty and stationed in a combat zone
  • You register the vehicle in Tennessee
  • The vehicle is titled and registered in your name alone or jointly with your spouse or a lineal relative
  • You give the seller a copy of your official orders at the time of purchase
