Texas Driver License and ID Card Fee Exemption for Disabled Veterans

Driver license or ID card fee waived

You pay no fee for a Texas driver license or ID card if you have a service-connected disability of at least 60 percent and receive VA compensation for it. The exemption does not cover commercial driver licenses, and you have to apply before your current licence or ID card expires.

How to apply

Submit a completed Texas Driver License or ID Card Application in person at a Texas Department of Public Safety driver license office, or by mail to Texas Department of Public Safety, Central Cash Receiving, PO Box 15999, Austin TX 78761-5999. Once your disability status is on record you can renew online.

What you'll need

Your VA Benefit Summary Letter, or official documents from your branch of service certifying your character of discharge, your disability percentage and that you receive compensation for it.

Eligibility

  • You received an honorable discharge
  • You have a service-connected disability of at least 60 percent
  • You receive compensation from the VA for that disability
  • You are not subject to sex offender registration requirements
  • You apply before your current licence or ID card expires
