Texas Gold Star License Plates

Local Texas county tax assessor-collector office, for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles
Plates issued free of charge, one set per eligible family member

Texas issues Gold Star license plates free of charge to the family of a service member who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. There are four designs: Gold Star Family for a parent, sibling or child, Gold Star Father, Gold Star Mother and Gold Star Spouse. The plates can be personalized, and each eligible family member gets one set.

How to apply

Submit the Texas DMV Application for Gold Star License Plates to your local county tax assessor-collector office with proof of your relationship and of the service member’s death.

What you'll need

Proof of your relationship to the service member, such as a marriage or birth certificate, and documentation that they died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Eligibility

  • You are registering a vehicle in Texas
  • You are a family member of a service member who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You do not already have a set of Texas Gold Star license plates
