Texas Hazlewood Act Tuition Exemption for Veterans

Texas Veterans Commission, with the admissions office of your Texas institution
Tuition and fees waived for up to 150 credit hours

You can have your tuition and fees waived for up to 150 credit hours at a Texas public college or university. Living expenses, books and supply fees are not covered.

How to apply

Apply and get accepted to a Texas public institution through the Apply Texas application or the school’s own admissions application, then hand your completed Hazlewood exemption application to that school’s admissions office with your DD214 and your VA education Certificate of Eligibility. What you'll need

A DD214 showing an honorable discharge or separation, your VA education Certificate of Eligibility, and the completed Hazlewood exemption application.

Eligibility

  • You live in Texas now
  • You named Texas as your home of record when you entered the U.S. Armed Forces, entered the U.S. Armed Forces from Texas, or were a Texas resident
  • You received an honorable discharge or separation
  • You served at least 181 days of active duty, not counting training
  • You have no federal veterans education benefits left that are worth more than the Hazlewood benefit
  • You are not in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by Texas
  • You are enrolled in classes the college receives tax support for
  • You meet your school’s grade point average and satisfactory academic progress rules for an undergraduate degree or certificate and are not taking an excessive number of credit hours
