You can learn a trade or skill by being paid to train on the job instead of sitting in a classroom. Approved programs run from six months to two years, start you at no less than half of a fully trained employee’s wage, give you at least one raise during training, and end at no less than 85 percent of the fully trained wage. Training is supervised for at least half of your work time and leads to an entry-level position. Federal, state and local government training programs do not qualify.
